Rwanda Birding Experience – Rwanda Safari News

The destination Rwanda known to be among the smallest countries on the African continent goes beyond the amazing Rwanda gorilla safaris and the incredible culture to also capture a tune of 1450 species of birds making her a beyond the ordinary birding destination.

Among these bird species, twenty seven (27) of them are Albertine rift endemics making Rwanda birding safaris unique and rewarding. Birding in Rwanda features an amazing potential that would assist to diversify the traditional Rwanda tour product centred on Mountain Gorillas, wildlife and culture.

Rwanda has four (4) National Parks namely; Akagera National Park, Gishwati Mukura National Park, Nyungwe Forest National Park and Volcanoes National Park which feature diverse environments ranging from dense forests through savannah to Alpine ecosystems presenting a rich ground for survival of various bird species.

Nyungwe Forest National Park to the south west of the country has 310 bird species including Stuhlman’s Double-collared sunbird, Rwenzori Turaco, Red-Collared Mountain Babbler, White Headed Wood-Hoopoe, Kungwe Apalis, Purple-breasted Sunbird and Paradise Fly catcher.

Being a forest environment like the Kibale National Park normally explored on Uganda birding safaris, Nyungwe also has many species of primates including Chimpanzees and colobus monkeys some of which are habituated for tracking experience.

The Akagera National Park to the east popular for wildlife safaris in Rwanda is also home to 525 bird species including the Red faced Barbet, Shoebill, African fin-foot, African fish eagle and Cormorant.

The open savannah landscapes coupled with the extensive wetland system in the whole of Central Africa present ideal environment for survival of diverse species.

To the north east of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park shares the border with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park of Uganda and Virunga National Park of Congo protecting the greater Virunga massif which is a chain of eight (8) volcanic mountains presenting a rich ground for gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda Rwanda Congo.

It is a destination for 178 bird species among which include; Rwenzori Double Collared Sunbird, Archer’s Ground Robin, Dusky Crimsonwing and Rwenzori Turaco.

The Rugezi Swamp close to Musaze in the north of the country is another Rwanda’s birding haven.

With such incredible spots, the Rwanda’s birding experience is quite rewarding and can be encountered throughout the year though Migrant species are available from December through to February.
