How To Get to Kibale Forest National Park Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari

Although many of the roads which lead to Kisoro are well tarmacked, tourists are advised to use 4WD vehicles.

Tourists can also get to Kibale National Park by air. The park is served by three airfields. Tourists have to book one of the daily flights from Entebbe International Airport.

One airfield is at Kasese (75km from the town of Fort Portal): another in Mbarara called Nyakisharara (which is about 98km from Kanyanchu; and another in the Tooro/Semuliki Wildlife Reserve which is 86km from the hub of the park at Kanyanchu.

• Kibale Safari Lodge “The Comfort Money Can’t Buy”

Kibale Safari Lodge is located on the way to Bigodi in Kanyanchu. Guest accommodation is offered in two (2) rooms on the main lodge building and five (5) other private luxury cottages which are well furnished and comfortable.

The cottages have private toilets and showers with both cold and hot water. Meals and drinks are served in the onsite restaurant and the well-stocked bar.

The meals include breakfast, lunch and dinner with freedom to have as much juice, tea and coffee as possible.

While at the lodge, tourists can enjoy amazing views of the park including the flora and some of the fauna therein.

• Chimps’ Nest

The lodge gets its name from the frequent primate visitors which it receives. It is situated near Nyabubale village (between Bigodi and Nkingo) and is just a 15 minutes’ drive from Kanyanchu the pivot of most of Kibale’s activities including the UWA chimp-tracking adventures.

Accommodation is offered in self-contained cottages, self-contained budget rooms and the family cottages which are located near the restaurant and can accommodate up to six (6) people.

All the self-contained cottages and budget rooms are powered by solar energy in respect of the fragility of the area in which the lodge is situated.

• Kibale Forest Camp

Kibale Forest Camp is situated a few minutes to the south of Kibale National Park. The accommodation unit boarders the Magombe swamp which forms part of the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary; just ten (10) minutes from the Kanyanchu Visitor Center.

Accommodation is affordable and gives tourists a taste of basic African architecture. The camp has ten (10) safari tents which are craftily hidden in the profuse forest and a budget camping ground for travelers who prefer the camping option.

Delicious meals are also served here in a comfortable restaurant which is also built in a traditional African style.

• Mantana Tented Camp

This camp is accessed just a few kilometers before reaching the village of Bigodi and just 2kms past the National Park office at Kanyanchu.

Its lodging is offered in seven (7) tents which are well furnished with features like 2 bedrooms, en-suite washrooms including showers and flush toilets; a dressing area, ample space and a private verandah where guests can stand and gaze beyond the horizon.

Drinks and meals care available in the restaurant which extends to form a spacious dining area.

• Safari Hotel Bigodi

The hotel offers budget options for guests and is frequented by campers and backpackers and other tourists who enjoy saving a couple of dollars.

It is pleasantly located along the Bigodi – Kamwenge road engulfed in the beautiful vegetation. Accommodation is offered in single and double rooms, four (4) bandas and a secure camping ground which also includes an area to set up a camp fire.

Guests’ laundry is catered for by the hotel at affordable prices. The hotel has clean latrines and showers which squirt booth cold and hot water depending on what the guest feels like showering on a particular day. Delicious meals are also available on request.

• Nyinabulitwa Resort and Safari Camp

Nyinabulitwa Resort and Safari Camp is located approximately 20kms outside Fort Portal Town and serves as a sleepover point for travelers on Safaris to the western National Parks of Murchison Falls National Park, Rwenzori Mountains, Semuliki National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the coveted Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

• Crater Valley Kibale (CVK) Lakeside Resort

The resort is located just 10 km from the Kanyanchu visitor center in the Kibale Forest National Park and 21 km from the clean town of Fort Portal providing memorable nights of accommodation for tourists on Uganda safaris.

The resort is intentionally situated on the shores of Crater Lake Nyabikere (which means the lake of frogs); and provides glorious views of the Rwenzori Mountains whose snow is visible on clear-sky days.

The different rooms at the resort include double and single rooms while other visitors can be accommodated in the guesthouse.

The lodge also has a camping ground where tourists can erect tents for the night. Apart from the guests who opt for the camping option, accommodation is on the basis of bed and breakfast.

• Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve

Lake Nkuruba Nature reserve is located about 18km from Fort Portal town in western Uganda along the Rwaihamba road.

Guests are housed in thatched bandas and self-camping which are all intentionally designed to offer tourists a few nights to remember about their Safaris to Uganda.

The bandas can accommodate between two (2) and five (5) guests per night. There are pit latrines which are shared by the guests.

Meals are served at the camping area in a a restaurant which features African architecture. In resemblance with the natural environment and with conservation at the back of their minds the management of this camping site has opted to use solar energy to light the bandas.

Security at Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve is held prime and guests can be sure of a night or nights full of rest.

• Primate Lodge Kibale

Primate Lodge presents luxury and comfort to its guests in eco-friendly accommodation units.

The Lodge is located deep in Kibale National Park and is therefore very close to where most of the park’s tourist activities start from.

Check-in time is at 2:00pm and the checkout time is 10:00am. Visitor accommodation units include eight (8) superior safari tents; seven (7) ultimate forest cottages; a well maintained camping area and the sky tree house.

The Lodge therefore feasibly meets the needs of tourists at all levels including the budget and midrange travelers.

The rooms feature private amenities whereas tourists who use the camping ground can share the clean amenities.

In the main lounge area, tourists can find charging spots where they can charge their gadgets. Meals and drinks are served in the onsite restaurant and well-stocked bar.

In addition, the lodge has an exclusive camping area; ample parking space and a souvenir shop.

• Kanyanchu River Camp

The lodge is located at the center of the park; at Kanyanchu where most of the park’s activities start from including the forest walks and the primate tracking.

Accommodation is offered in four (4) bandas which have comfortable beds and cozy beddings. There is an additional elevated banda which is self-catering.

The lodge also has a sky tree house which is located just 10 minutes away from the main camp area and is capable of housing up to two (2) occupants.

Food at the lodge is offered in a canteen which operates from 7:00am and closes at 12:00pm but necessitates tourists to make timely reservations and bookings.

• Sebitoli Camping Ground

Sebitoli Camping Ground is owned and operated by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and can be found in the northern part of Kibale National Park.

The park has no electricity but is not limited to coziness.

With a maximum capacity of eleven beds, the camp offers accommodation in twin rooms which all feature modern washroom facilities with showers.

The overhead showers flow with cold water only but tourists can request for warm water from the camp’s management in case they need it.

Interesting Tourist’s Attractions in Kibale Forest National Park Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari

• Primate Species

Famous for her population of primate species totaling to thirteen (13) in numbers, Kibale is surely a place any tourist will want to visit to listen to the charming sounds produced by the primates in this life-filled ecosystem.

The most visited part of Kibale National Park for primate walks is Kanyanchu but tourists can also walk to Sebitoli Forest to see some primates there too.

Some of the primates which can be seen include the black and white colobus monkeys, grey cheeked Mangabey, blue monkeys, red tailed monkeys, the vulnerable red colobus monkey, the vervet monkeys and the olive baboons.

Some other primates are better seen in the night walks for example the Pottos and bush babies with the help of bright flashlights.

• Other wildlife species

Although many of the ground dwelling mammals are uncommonly seen, Kibale National park still offers the opportunity for tourists to encounter some big and small mammals which are found in the other National Parks.

These mammal species include the 500 elephants, the golden cats, leopards; lions on a few occasions can also be seen migrating from Queen Elizabeth National Park, Serval cat, buffalos, bus pigs, Harvey’s and Peter’s duikers, African Palm Civet, the Marsh mongooses and the Alexander’s Cusimanse.

Other mammals can be seen around the park’s swamps for example the Sitatunga near Bigodi wetland sanctuary and the swamp otter.

Some lucky tourists also have the opportunity to see a number of reptiles and amphibians during the walks throughout the national Park.

• Bird and Butterfly Species

Kibale National Park has an attractive bird list with up to 375 colourful species of birds including the Blue-breasted Kingfisher, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, Brown-chested Alethe, White-naped Pigeon, Black Bee-eater, Nahans francolin, Red-chested Owlet, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, , Little Greenbul, Scaly-breasted Illadopsis , Black-eared Ground Thrush, Little Green Bul, Brown Illadopsis, White-tailed Ant-thrush, Green-breasted Pitta, African Pitta, Black-capped Apalis, Yellow Spotted Nicator, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Western Nicator, White-naped Pigeon and the African Grey Parrot. Visitors also have the opportunity to see 250 colorful butterfly species.

• Floral Species

In the past the park lost a great number of its tree species due to the logging that was going on in the area. A number of efforts have however seen the numbers of trees in the park beginning to regain numbers that had reduced in the past.

Some of the species which were lost have been replanted whereas other exotic tree species like the eucalyptus and the pine trees have been planted in order to prevent the forest from dying out.

The park’s area today has up to 250 tree species, with the park’s largest area being covered in moist evergreen and semi-deciduous forest.

These many species have for long attracted researchers from different parts of the country and other parts of the world to carryout studies of such a unique forest community.

• Ndali – Kasenda Crater Lakes.

  

In the Kasenda, Rweetera, Rwaihamba, and Kabata areas about 30km south of Fort Portal lie the beautiful Ndali Kasenda crater lakes.

These lakes were formed about 10,000 years ago and they include sixty (60) stable and seasonal freshwater lakes.

The lakes are indeed beautiful and are appalling to the human eye offering views of the thick-green vegetation, beautiful butterflies, jolly monkeys, the Rwenzori ranges, the melodic bird species and panoramic views of Kabarole’s tea estates.

While at this point tourists can also see the southern rift valley plains and Lake George. Adding to their beauty, the lakes at Kasenda have a magical story attached to them.

It is believed that they were formed by the Chwezi ruler called Ndahura who fled from his kingdom after his son (Wamala) had taken his throne from him.

Activities in Kibale Forest National Park Uganda Chimpanzee Tracking Safari

• Chimpanzee Tracking/Trekking and Habituation

Kibale National Park has 1450 chimpanzees which tourists are assured to see whenever they visit Kibale National Park.

Chimpanzee tracking sets off at 8 am and another at 2:00pm and takes an average duration of three (3) hours.

Tourists who get up earlier also stand the chance to watch the chimps between 6:00am and 6:30am as they breastfeed their young ones, feeding, copulating, hunting, patrolling copulating, resting and exhibiting, to the time they build their new nests at 7:00pm.

Interested tourists can also take part in the full-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) but this requires making timely bookings.

Tourists will then be assigned a chimp community which is undergoing habituation and this is a very satisfying experience.

• Birding in Kibale National Park

With the abundance of bird species, tourists can successfully enjoy a Uganda Birding Safari. The Birding tour commences at 7:00 am at Kanyanchu.

Birding tours can also lead to a place called Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, located just outside the park.

This wetland sanctuary has up to 138 bird species which may be seen during guided walks along the boardwalk trail and viewing platforms.

These include the Yellow-spotted Barbet, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Black Bishop, White-breasted Negrofinch Western Nicator and the Grey-winged Robin-chat.

• Nature Walks and Hiking in Kibale National Park

Adding to the daily nature walks, tourists on a night nature walk stand a greater chance of seeing some nocturnal species after many of the primates and other day residents leave to get some rest.

The night walk normally starts at 7:30pm and returns to the camp1 – 2 hours later .

Armed with powerful torches, tourists may see rarely seen creatures such as the bush baby, potto, nightjar, cricket and tree chilling hyrax.as well as the occasional civet or serval cat.

• Cultural encounters

Tourists can make excursions to the local people who surround Kibale National Park, principally the Batooro and Bakiga.

Tourists can expect to be served to traditional arts of these people like traditional healing, local African crafts, music and dance, and to interact with these interesting groups of people.

Today they have grouped themselves under the umbrella called Kibale Association for Rural Environment Development (KAFRED).

Through this eco-tourism arrangement, the locals have benefitted from tourism activities which have a direct and indirect impact on their livelihoods.

• Children’s Activities

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) only allows children above twelve (12) years to participate in the forest walks with the rest of the adults.

The park however provides educational programs for children below 12 years including forest walks and pond dipping which are all done under the guidance of well-trained ranger guides.

The legends have it that the two brothers named Kigarama and Mburo settled in the area that is currently occupied by Lake Mburo grazing their long horned cattle across the open savannah plains that thrive up to today.

Kidepo National Park, Located in the north eastern part of Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park covers a geographical landscape of 1,442km².

It is in the district of Kaboong about 220km from Moroto the biggest town in the sub region and 700km from Kampala the Uganda’s capital city.

Kidepo Valley National Park was established in the year 1962 and it contains 77 species of mammals, 475 bird species of which 60 are endemic to the park on the standards of Uganda.

Mgahinga National Park, which was established in 1991 covers a geographical surface of 33.7km² making the smallest national Park in Uganda.

Mgahinga National Park is the second habitat that contains the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas and it is the only national park in Uganda with counts of the rare and endangered golden monkeys which only thrive in the Virunga massif in the whole world.

Murchison falls National Park, Regarded as Uganda’s largest protected area, Murchison Falls National Park was nowhere until 1952 when 3,840km² of land in the North West part of Uganda were established as a national Park.

Perched on the northern extreme of the western arm of the great East African rift valley, Murchison Falls National Park is 80km from Masindi town which is the largest town in the sub region and 311km² from the city of Kampala, the Uganda’s capital.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in the south west of Uganda stretching for 321Km² at an elevation of 1,160 – 2,607 m above sea level.

Bwindi is one of those areas in East Africa with large expanse of Afro montane lowland forest which dates back to the pre-historic era and is known to have survived the last ice age.

Mount Elgon National Park, Spreading to over 1,121km² of land, Mount Elgon National Park lies with in the eastern side of Uganda close to Kenyan boarder 255km from Kampala which is the country’s capital city.

Kibale National Park, The park is located in the western part of Uganda sharing the districts of Kabarole and Kamwenge and is 358km surface transfer from Kampala the Uganda’s capital city and 26km from Fort Portal the largest town in the area.

Kibale National Park is entirely forested landscape that stretches to 795km² of land coverage and it is one of the mature remaining tropical rain forests in Uganda.

Semuliki National Park, Spreading to over 220km² of land surface, Semuliki National Park is located in the west of Uganda in the county of Bwamba, Bundibugyo district. Kibale National Park joins with Queen Elizabeth National Park to form a 180km wildlife corridor, with a number of mammal and bird species making daily, weekly and monthly trips between these two parks.

The northern part of Kibale National Park at Sebitoli and the southern part of Queen Elizabeth at Ishaha join to form this awesome corridor.

While at Kibale, tourists can also access a number of other interesting places in less than a day’s drive. For example they can make trips to the Toro – Semuliki wildlife reserve or just make excursions to Fort Portal town where they will get a chance to see the palace of the King of Toro.

While in Fort Portal, tourists can have astounding views of the legendary Rwenzori Mountains which have snow on top.

The park has for long been a center for research mainly in tree species and primates especially the Chimpanzee. The Makerere University Biological Field Station (MUBFS) is also located here.
