Planning a gorilla trek or wildlife trip in Uganda? The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) just rolled out some important updates that make booking permits easier and add new experiences to your safari.
The changes include two newly habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, golden cat tracking in Kibale National Park, and a smoother payment system at UWA headquarters. Dr. James Musinguzi, PhD, Executive Director of UWA, announced these updates on April 14, 2026.
What’s New from UWA
- A faster, more transparent payment system at UWA headquarters
- Two new habituated gorilla groups are now open for trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
- Golden cat tracking is now available in Kibale Forest National Park
Here’s what you need to know for your next Uganda safari.
Upgraded Payment System at UWA Headquarters
UWA has installed a new Inplant Machine at its Reservations Office in Kampala to handle payments more efficiently.
All cash payments for permits and other services now go through this system. Key details:
- Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
- Processing: Payments show in the system about 24 hours after you pay
- Confirmation: Bookings are finalized right after the bank verifies payment
The goal is fewer delays, better accountability, and a simpler booking process for travelers and tour operators. Just make sure you plan for that 24-hour clearance window.
Two New Gorilla Groups Open for Trekking
Gorilla trekking in Uganda just got a little easier. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park now has two more fully habituated families:
- Happy Group – in the Buhoma sector
- Nshanjare Group – in the Rushaga sector
Both groups are now in UWA’s official booking system. Permit numbers will follow the usual daily limits — there won’t be “extra” permits beyond the quota.
What this means for you:
- You can check availability directly through UWA
- There are a few more trekking spots open
- Booking early is still crucial because demand is high
This means more travelers get the chance to experience Uganda’s most famous wildlife encounter — coming face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas in the wild.
Golden Cat Tracking Launches in Kibale National Park
If you want something truly different, UWA has launched golden cat tracking in the Kanyanchu area along Ngogo Road in Kibale National Park.
The African golden cat is one of Africa’s most secretive predators, and sightings are rare. This is a unique, exclusive experience.
- Booking details: Reservations are on-site only for now — not available online yet
- Book 24–48 hours in advance
- Cost: $350 per person for a five-day tracking window
- You’ll need to bring your own guide; UWA provides ranger support
It’s perfect for wildlife photographers, researchers, and travelers who want to get off the usual safari route.
Why These Updates Matter for Your Uganda Safari
These changes show UWA’s focus on better service for tourists while protecting Uganda’s wildlife.
With easier payments, more gorilla trekking options, and a new rare-wildlife experience, planning your trip just got simpler — and your safari got more diverse.
Whether you’re in the thick forests of Bwindi or the primate-rich trails of Kibale, these updates make the whole experience smoother.
