4 Days Rwanda Safari: Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Kigali International Airport & Transfer to Musanze Volcanoes National Park
Your fantastic 4-day Rwanda safari (double gorilla trekking trip) starts as soon as you arrive at Kigali International Airport. You’ll be met by our tour driver guide, who will help load your bags into our comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle before embarking on a scenic 2-3 hour drive north. Pass beautiful rolling green hills as you head to your accommodation in Musanze town, near Volcanoes National Park headquarters.
With a population of around 300 mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park draws thousands of visitors each year, eager to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat. It is also where American primatologist Dian Fossey spent 18 years studying gorillas and protecting them from poachers, leading to her murder. The park gained fame through the Hollywood movie “Gorillas in the Mist” (1988), which chronicled her life’s work. Relax tonight as you prepare for the unforgettable gorilla trek tomorrow.

After a 6 am breakfast, transfer to the park offices to meet your local park rangers and guides for a gorilla trekking briefing. At 8 am, begin your unforgettable trek deep into the jungle through volcano forests with an expert guide to search for the giant Mountain Gorilla. Trackers leave before the tourist groups to locate the gorilla groups, so your guide will know where to take you.
In wet and muddy conditions, the trek can be tiring as you hike through dense vegetation and climb to the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, where the gorilla families are found. Once you spot these gentle, human-like creatures (we share 98% of our DNA with them), it will all be worth it. You can get very close to the gorillas, and watching their movements is like seeing a mirror image of yourself. Your visit with the gorillas will last one unforgettable hour.
Return to your lodge for a late, delicious lunch and relaxation. In the evening, take a walk to the beautiful twin lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera, where you can meet local fishermen and enjoy spectacular views of the lake. Retire for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
