Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Evening Visit to The Twin Lakes
Set off early after breakfast for the park headquarters for a briefing from your excellent local guides. At 8 am, embark on a trek in search of rare Mountain gorillas.
Gorilla trekking in the dense forest can sometimes be wet, muddy, and uncomfortable. The terrain is by no means easy either, so it can be relatively tiresome and often humid, but the sheer thrill in coming across a habituated family of gorillas, dominated by a great male silverback, more than outweighs any difficulty.
You need to be reasonably fit to walk up to 6 hours – up and downhill, as it may take anything between 30 mins and 6 hours to reach your designated gorilla family.
The trackers have already set out and located the gorilla family by the time you start your trek, so your actual time of walking can usually be predicted when you set off.
You can get very close to the mountain gorillas, who are gentle, and watching their movements is like seeing a mirror image of yourself.
Your visit with the gorillas will last one unforgettable hour. Return to the lodge for a late lunch and relaxation.
In the evening, tour the beautiful twin lakes: Bulera and Ruhondo. Explore the scenic views and the local fishing activity. Retire for dinner and overnight.

Then take a scenic hike to Dian Fossey’s grave site. The trek requires relative fitness levels and takes 3-4 hours.
You have another opportunity to spot Forest hogs, buffalo, elephants, duiker, birds, golden monkeys, and even gorillas in addition to enjoying the breathtaking natural beauty of this Rwandan reserve.
Your guide will give plenty of information on Dian Fossey and her work in saving the critically endangered Mountain Gorilla from extinction.
On reaching the site, you’ll be able to see the ruins of her house and of course pay a visit to her grave. Lying next to her is the grave of her favorite gorilla, Digit, along with 20 other gorillas killed by poachers.
